Bishop Family of Sherbrooke

Samuel Bishop, a coal miner, was the son of William Bishop and Maria Hill and was born in 1832 in Tipton or Princes End, Staffordshire, England – Samuel Bishop, Coalminer Immigrates To Nsw Australia .

In 1860, he had married Mary McGann, (born 1839 in Clare, Ireland – died in  1917 in Bulli). In 1873, Samuel Bishop had been elected as a representative for Bulli Range on the Committee of the Bulli and Bellambi Benefit Society. There is information in which indicates that their son Daniel Bishop was born on Bulli Mountain in 1873. A family connection, William Swaine,  was also Secretary of the Society. Samuel Bishop’s death on 9 Nov 1878 in Bulli was by Suicide.

Their children included :

    • Eliza Jane Bishop born 17 JAN 1861 in Four Mile Creek Near Maitland  and died 12 OCT 1900 in Clifton married John James Swain, Carpenter, born in 1850 in Cabramatta – died 1933 in Kogarah. They lived in Stanwell Park.
    • Charles “William” Bishop (1862 Newcastle – 1949 Sydney – Probate) – married in 1885 at St Augustine’s Bulli to Louisa Jane Organ (1866 – 1940) (daughter of William Henry Organ and Jane Parsons & granddaughter of Joseph & Louisa Parsons & Elias Organ) – in 1888 he was listed as a Freeholder at Bulli, and at one time lived in Organs Rd Bulli. Later he was at Gray St Woonona at time when their son Louis enlisted in WW1. His probate notice listed him as a Retired Miner.
      • Claude W. Bishop (11885 – 1968 married Ruth Morgan ( – 1944) and later remarried to Evelyn M Lord nee Cantwell
      • Louis Victor Bishop 1887 – 1951 – Probate – served in WW1 – ADFA entry – was a farmer in Cairns at time of enlistment in 1916 – lived in Atherton after WW1, but was resident at Randwick at the time of his death – executrix was his wife Mary Pattie Bishop whom he married in Queensland in 1919
      • Ruby Alice Bishop  1889 – 1975 (NSW BDM 23437/1975 ) – Findagrave note that some believe that Ruby married Edward Reynolds Blackhall – however that Ruby died in 1957 and was buried at Woronora Cemetery – whereas the 1975 NSW BDM death entry cites Ruby’s parents as William Charles & Louisa Jane.
      • Albert S. Bishop 1895 – 1942 married Amy Richardson
      • Walter Edwin Bishop 1899 – 1975 married Grace Stanley
      • Alma E. Bishop 1903 – 1987 Bulli – married James N Steel – had lived at Milton.  Their daughter recalls Alma speaking of the family being at Bulli Mountain when Cataract Dam was proposed to be constructed.
      • Constance Ma(r)y Bishop 1905 – 1971 ? – a Nurse who trained at Auburn and South Sydney Womens Hospitals – note – some believe that Connie may have married Francis W Birkin – however her electoral roll listings suggests that this was not the case.
    • Samuel Bishop, carpenter,  born in 1864 in Maitland, and died in 1956. He married Emma Hill in 1889 at the Bulli Wesleyan Church. They lived at Lachlan St Thirroul –  their Golden Wedding was celebrated in 1939Emma was born  in 1868 and died 1945. They are both buried St Augustine’s Bulli Cemetery.
      • Clarice Ivy Bishop born 1890 – died 1956 – married John Smith who was born in 1888 and died in 1954
        • Grace Smith born in  1915 in Helensburgh, died 2001 in Woy Woy – married Herbert Henry Eastham who was born on 17/05/1913 in Leyton, UK and died in 1969 in Burwood,

      • Hilda May Bishop – born in 1891 – died 1961 in Rylstone – in 1922 married at St Oswalds Coledale (registered in Bulli)  to Fred Yardley (1883 – 1969) (son of Joseph Yardley and wife Elizabeth Aston – and also grandson of Thomas Aston and wife Emma Jones the bakers of Clifton – who coincidentally were  also great grandparents of our Black Diamond Heritage Centre volunteer Bronwen Chamberlain – such a tangled web !)
        • Kevin Fred Yardley (1924 – 1994 Kandos)
    • Martha Ellen Bishop – born 6 Sep 1870 in Bulli,  and died 7 Mar 1936 in Sydney. She married Oliver “Ollie” Augustine Cram, son of William Anthony Cram and Margaret Jane Cram nee Rea, Engineer and Power House Attendant,  who was born in 1883 in Woonona. Ollie was a brother of Robert Benjamin Cram, James Edward Cram and Arthur Ernest Cram, and a grandson of James Cram and Sarah Hedley. They were living in Thirroul in 1920, and later in Stanley St Wollongong. He died on 6 May 1933 in Wollongong Hospital, due to an accident in Railway St Corrimal, when he was riding his bicycle and collided with a woman and was thrown to the ground, sustaining a fractured skull. They lived in Stanwell Park, Clifton, Woonona and Wollongong. Martha had been Church Organist and Sunday School teacher in the Church of England, at Woonona and in Stanwell Park.
      • Muriel Ellen Cram was their only child – born in 1906 in Woonona, and died in  1989 in Sydney 
    • Daniel Bishop – born in 1873 on Bulli Mountain (sourced from trees). This is consistent with his father Samuel Bishop being elected as a representative for Bulli Range on the Committee of the Bulli and Bellambi Benefit Society in 1873. Daniel died 1957 at 689 King Georges Road Penshurst – appointed Junior Porter at Otford Railway Station,  in 1894, Porter at Dapto Railway Station in 1897, had been a Station Master at Bellambi (1930 – 1934, retired in 1934), Hurstville, and lived at Lachlan St Thirroul.
