  • John Thomas Hunt b.1839 Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa – d. 1926 Coledale Cottage Hospital, when he was living at George St Thirroul – buried at St Augustine’s Bulli. John married in 1860 to  [1] Mary Ann Brown b.1833 Surry Hills – died 1909 Thirroul (daughter of William Brown b c.1800 Norwich, Shoemaker convicted of larceny and transported to Australia 1820 on the Elizabeth  married Elizabeth Catherine Foss). Possibly married [2] to Amy (Hughes) ?

John Thomas and Mary Ann Hunt & their family moved to Sherbrooke in the 1870’s according to son Frederick’s 1943 obituary and as indicated in a letter to the Bulli School Teacher, Miss Mary A Gorman in 1879. The mail contract for 1885 for between Bulli and Sherbrooke was awarded to John Hunt. In 1885 and 1886 he was raising concerns about the Sherbrooke School Teacher. Also in 1885 (more) he was involved in the affairs of the Sherbrooke Union Church and in 1888  & 1889 the Flower Shows of Sherbrooke. Over the years many of their family would be coal miners and several, Negus Edward Hunt and Frederick Hunt would be killed in mining accidents, see more details below. A number also served in WW1 and William Herbert Hunt died at Gallipoli in May 1915 and Prescott Henry Hunt in France in 1918 (see Sherbrooke’s Sons in WW1 page).

John Thomas Hunt’s 1926 obituary”Old South Coast Identity. DEATH OF MR. J. T. HUNT.We have to record the passing way of anothor of the old identities of the South Coast in the person of Mr. John Thomas Hunt, who had reached the 86th milestone of life. The death occurred in Illawarra Cottage Hospital at Coledale at 9 o’clock last Sunday morning, he having been conveyed to the institution from Thirroul a week previously owing to a ‘stroke’ incapacitating him. He received all medical skill and nursing attention, but the end came in a peaceful manner. The funeral took place at midday on Monday, the remains being interred with those of his late wife in the cemetery at St. Augustine’s Church of England, Bulli, the service at the grave side being conducted by Rev. L. Parsons. Deceased leaves a family of two daughters and six sons — Mrs. Dodds (Sarah, Enficld), Elizabeth (Sydney), William (Hclcnsburgh), Frederick (Dapto), George (Bellambi), James (Rydalmore), Charles (Thirroul), Henry (Thirroul). There are a large number of relatives throughout the coast, two of the grandsons who are well known, being Messrs. Leo. and Allan Hunt, of the motor bus service between Wollongong and Austimner. The late Mr. Hunt was originally engaged in farming pursuits, and is still remembered at Ulladulla, from which place he went to Sherbrooke, and about 30 years ago moved to Thirroul, where he spent the rest of his life, and in which town he was known to almost everybody and highly respected.

  • Negus Edward Hunt b. 1871 Ulladulla – died in a mine accident at Metropolitan Colliery, Helensburgh in 1910 when he was killed by a horse. As a boy in Sherbrooke,  he survived an unusual gunshot injury, married Rose Cooper who later remarried to Mangles after the death of Negus in a mine accident. Negus was in financial difficulties in 1894.

July 1910 -“FATAL COLLIERY ACCIDENT. – HELENSBURGH. Friday. – A fatal accident occurred at the Metropolitan Colliery this morning. Negus Hunt, aged 36, employed as a roadsman, soon after  starting work was struck by a horse attached to six loaded skips, inflicting terrible injuries, death resulting in a few minutes.”

July 1910 – Inquest News Report

October 1910 “At the quarterly meeting of the Helensburgh Workmen’s Club the sum of £10 10s was voted to the widow and children of Negus Hunt who was killed in the colliery three months ago”

July 1911 ” In Memoriam. HUNT.—In loving memory of our dear brother and uncle, Negus Edward Hunt,   who was accidentally killed in Helensburgh Mine, July 8th, 1910, aged 39 years. Inserted by his loving brother and sister- in law, H. and L. Hunt, and niece and nephew 23

    George Charles Hunt married Ellen Herbert (widow) maiden name Broadbent born in Qld. Lived in Helensburgh. His second wife (no record of marriage) was to Edith Sarah Hunt maiden name Farrant born Vic her first Husband was Thomas F Hunt not sure what happen to him.
