Parsons Family

Sherbrooke’s Parsons descend from John and Grace Parsons’ grandson, William Parsons, who was a son of Matthew Parsons, a Weaver.

Matthew arrived as a free settler on the Layton in 1838, with his wife, eldest child, and also brother Reuben. The family state they were brought out by HW Macarthur of Camden, before they settled in the Illawarra in 1844. Aspects of their journey were recounted in Puah Parsons nee Gardiner’s 1901 obituary.

It should be noted that there are at least two different Illawarra Parsons Families that date from the 19th Century. Scroll down to view the more detailed Parsons family tree, or continue here to learn of the Sherbrooke branch of the Parsons.

For reference : The other Parsons family descend from Joseph Parsons, son of Thomas Parsons and Sarah Organ. Joseph arrived as a free settler on the Bussorah Merchant, and married Louisa Walkley.

Sherbrooke’s Parsons, were part of a large Wollongong family, which have also had members serve as Mayor of Wollongong, IMB Directors, a Nurse in WW1, and seen the establishing of Parsons Funeral Directors. There was a William Parsons who was President of the Miners Federation in 1919.

Matthew Parsons (1806 – 1902) married Puah Gardiner, and it was their son William who lived at Sherbrooke.

William Parsons (1847 – ) married in 1872 at Wollongong to Margaret J Elliott (- 1910 probate). William’s 1932 obituary, which refers to his management role at the Knight’s Saw Mill at Sherbrooke, and how after Sherbrooke’s resumption he worked at South Bulli Colliery. He had been active in the Union Church affairs in- a trustee in 1882,  1885, the controversy over the Sherbrooke school teacher of 1886, more. William won the Oddfellows Handicap in 1886. He was involved in the Sherbrooke Flower Show of 1888 and the school picnic of that year. And in 1890, William was Sherbrooke’s representative on the Bulli Cemetery Trust. There was talk that the Parsons were leaving Sherbrooke in 1890 – but did not seem to happen ? However in 1893, William Parsons was involved in the Sherbrooke Debating Club – and then in the 1896 rebuilding of the Sherbrooke Union Church, after the destruction of the original church in a bushfire. The Parsons seem to have been in Sherbrooke for as long as 20 years, from 1882 to 1902.
